I love Trivia!!
Random worthless knowledge. I collect it like some people collect Hummels. My family has always been big fans of Trivial Pursuit. It's usually a ritual that when everyone is home - this is what we play.
At Thanksgiving we had quite the game going. We added a tiddly toad death match - just to up the suspense. Can my brother-in-law come up with the answer to "What state in the United States was the London Bridge moved to?" while 30 plastic frogs fling around the table in a mad hopping spree? Well Alex, "what is NO, but goddamn that was funny".
Thanksgiving was especially fun since I roped my friend in to our family tradition. Admitedly, we were not the brightest duo of trivia. Oh we're bright - we just were getting really awful questions.
"Where were the 1908 Olymics held?"
Our answer: "Yehtisburg Frankfartica" (That would become our standard answer for any geography question.)
"Who did Jersey Joe Walcott knock out in the 7th round to win the heavyweight boxing title?"
Our answer: "Shirley Temple Black" (The new standard answer for any person we didn't know)
"Hepatitis causes an inflamation in what part of the body?"
Luckily Beck chimed in with the right answer (the liver) before I shouted out "Your hepafilter"
It isn't even about the game really - it's just fun. We're usually all laughing so hard there are tears. My dad and Art were on a team, and tried to guess an answer to a question. The answer was Dickens. They discussed him as a possibility, but then assumed that was almost TOO obvious to be the answer. Later, they were discussing another question and Art said "Let's not Dickens ourselves out of this one too!"
It's family bonding - some good ribbing, and everyone has their strengths.
My Dad is a pretty good History Geography kinda guy.
My brother-in-law Art and my uncle Kevin are the music gurus. Although Art often crosses in to sports knowledge.
My mom and my aunt Marylin are dangerous. They are able to pull random knowledge from the sky like moisture cells. How they know what the know is anyone's guess. They are unpridictable as to what they will know. The most frustrating thing about them is even if they don't know - somehow they guess and still get it right. My sister falls in this subset too. You never can tell what she knows.
My friend Becky is good at the science stuff - and knows way too much about organs.
As the English major everyone assumes I will be the literature buff. Which I do ok - but I am not one of those weird book nerds who can memorize and qoute weird lines from a book. If I can recall a sketchy plot - "Wasn't that book about the guy that had to prove he was a man, by doing stuff" - I figure I am doing pretty good. But my true strength is random movie trivia. It's horrible what I know.
I can answer questions about movies I've never even seen!
I was invited over to play Scene It with Mike's family. There was some trash talk at the dinner table. I didn't want to toot my own horn too much, but I felt fairly certain I was going to wipe the floor with all of them. When asked my prowess, I didn't want to force my hand, so I simply said, "I do ok".
I was trailing at the end of the first game, but I came from behind and eventually whipped them all in a stunning bout of answer three in a row to win.
I think I won the second game too. The third game I was only allowed to observe.
Q: Who loves trivia?
